The Appointment I Keep Rescheduling
I’ve been so busy. Too busy to stop and sit with my good Lord, my Father, my Creator, and Savior.
I haven’t had time to sit and talk to Him. I don’t make time to listen to Him. I don’t pay attention to His calling for me.
From rushing around every morning to get the kids to school and back on time to punch in for work, to fitting in making dinner and going to the gym. Making time for my oldest to my youngest. Attempting to catch up with my other half. By the end of the day, it’s too late. I’m too tired and need to get to bed early to start the routine all over again.
Saturdays and Sundays are also so filled with cleaning, laundry, and spending time with family I haven’t had time to talk to all week.
This world and all the things in it consume my time. The rat race of this life here takes hold of my days and plans them out for me.
In all of this, I haven’t forgotten God. I haven’t turned my back on Jesus.
But I’ve neglected Him.
I have stepped back from walking with Him. I am not living Kingdom life. I’m surviving worldly life.
I pray to God in sprinkles throughout my day, each and every day. But my tether, my connection to Him, has been unplugged.
And the Spirit pulls at my heart.
Reminding me that He needs me to meet Him every day.
He waits for me every day.
And every day, I miss our appointment.
Or I repeatedly reschedule with Him, with the full intention of making it tomorrow.
But when tomorrow comes, I don’t.
My heart longs for Him.
I’ve shifted my direction just slightly off the road, and my feet are tired. He can’t carry me if I’m not jumping into His arms.
Jesus tells us:

Maybe that’s what I’ve been missing.
Not more sleep.
Not another hour in the day.
Not another way to organize my schedule.
Him.
I’ve been called out. I’ve been put in my place this week, a couple of times, in fact.
I’m part of a mentorship that has taught me so much. Everyone in the group is part of my extended family. The community has helped me stay steady in my Bible and walk.
But I’ve obviously strayed.
God has spoken to me through our Bible teacher and mentor. To all of us, I’m sure. But the messages she has been sharing with us have not been speaking to me—they have been YELLING at me.
God is yelling for me to get myself back on the road He is paving for me.
I quite literally finished receiving one of those messages this morning. I sit here writing this with it fresh in my mind and heavy on my heart.
I need to get back.
I MUST get back on track.
I will have to miss out on rest or cut out other things that take from that time. I will grab my Bible every morning in the quiet of the dark and sit with my Lord.
The logistics and the timing aren’t the important part.
What is important is that I make the time and do it.
Not talk about it.
Not guilt myself about not doing it.
But actually sit down and just be with Him.
The Bible reminds us again and again of God’s constant presence in our lives.
“Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you.”— James 4:8
So why do I—why do we—neglect being present with Him?
While I am trying to figure it out, I won’t waste any more time without Him.
I can’t imagine living in my home and ignoring my children or spouse. Why would I? I love them. They love me.
So why do I neglect Him?
Because He’s giving me that choice.
He wants me to want to sit with Him.
And I do.
I just don’t make the sacrifices necessary to do so.
I will, though.
I am going to.
Jesus said:

Maybe seeking Him first doesn’t always mean rearranging our entire lives.
Maybe sometimes it simply means stopping long enough to remember who our lives belong to.
The laundry will still be there.
The dishes will still be there.
The emails will still be there.
The errands will still be there.
The schedule will still be waiting.
But so will He.
He isn’t asking me to have a perfect morning routine. He isn’t asking me to spend hours with Him every single day.
He is asking me to come.
To sit.
To listen.
To worship.
To read His Word.
To be still.
And sometimes, I think that is the hardest thing to do in a world that constantly tells us to keep moving.
“Be still, and know that I am God.”— Psalm 46:10
So today, I’m making a new appointment.
Not one that I intend to reschedule.
Not one that I’ll push to tomorrow.
Today.
I’m choosing to sit with my Father.
And tomorrow, I’ll do it again.
What about you?
Do you find yourself neglecting time with the Lord?
Do you find that He calls to you, but you put it off or procrastinate sitting with Him?
As I challenge myself today, I dare to challenge you to create a new spot in your daily planner—every day.
Morning. Noon. Night.
It doesn’t matter to Him.
It just needs to be quiet enough for you to hear His whispers and obey His roaring.
Grab your Bible in the silence, while the world rests, and find yourself a quiet corner. Sit with Him.
Worship Him.
Speak to Him.
Read His words, spoken in ancient writings, and let Him share His wisdom with you.
And if you’ve been missing your appointments with God, don’t spend another day beating yourself up over the ones you missed.
Just make another appointment.
He’s still there.
He’s been waiting.
And this time…
don’t reschedule.
